Reckless Driving in a Reckless Society
by American Binding & Publishing

The tragedies recorded in this book unfold daily on our television, our radios, and in our newspapers. Death is a common visitor to our highways and streets. Friends, relatives and loved ones are taken from us in an instant of tire screeching and the sickening sound of collisions.

But there does not need to be such carnage on our highways if we as drivers would only follow safe rules of the road:
*Stop speeding.
*Stop driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
*Respect other drivers.
*And use patience.

Just by abiding to these simple rules, hundreds of thousands could be saved from death and injuries each year. Remember, the life you save on the highway may be your own, or your loved ones, or even someone else’s loved ones.

Heart of a Cardiologist  -   A Medical Memoir
by Keenan F. Barber, M.D.

Perhaps no one understands better the effect of stress on a person’s heart than today’s cardiologist. At age 49, Dr. Jake Morgan’s middle aged heart seems to be failing him. Through his unique experience as both patient and doctor, the reader of Heart of a Cardiologist begins to understand the miracle of heart transplantation, the subtleties of coronary angioplasty and the importance of the cholesterol demon in today’s pandemic of coronary heart disease.

Struggling to treat and comfort his patients, Dr. Morgan somehow finds time for romance. While the miracle of a middle age romance might be too much for him, perhaps it is the therapy that will carry him through his crisis.

Based on the experience of the author’s unexpected heart attack and on actual case histories of his patients, this compelling story explores the limits of the human heart.

A Life That Counts
by Claude O. Bray

Born July 9, 1928 at 316 Forrest Street in Jackson, Tennessee, at the age of five years old the author and his family moved to their farm that sat near the highway about one half mile north of the present day Old Hickory Mall north of Jackson. There the story begins with the loss of the farm for a second time and follows the personal experiences of a family of eleven surviving children plus a mother and father, and how they were able to live through abject poverty in western Tennessee after losing all in the Great Depression of the 1930’s. It continues with their experiences and losses during World War II, and shows their determination to rise above all the hardships and give thanks to God for bringing them through it all.

Open the Door and Stand Back
by Margaret Combs

Operating an exclusive women’s retail store was not all fun and games for Margaret Combs. Although she was born into a family of retailers in western Nebraska, Margaret was not ready for the encounters she would face when she opened her “little boutique” in Corpus Christi.

Confronted not only with competition, but also with shop lifting by both men and women, leaky roofs, and bad plumbing, made running the store an everyday adventure. This book deals with the humor, the disappointment and the gratification of dealing with the public. Mrs. Combs retired from the world of business at the age of 79. On that final day of closing, she stood back and said, “Open the door and stand back– world, here I come.”

Today, she is writing, already published in several magazines, and is active in oil painting, a hobby that she really loves.

Between Triumph and Survival
by Dr. Raul Cuero

Available in English or Spanish

Ph.D., in Microbiology, Research Scientist & Distinguished Professor and inventor.

Dr. Cuero grew up during a time when 30% of the children in his hometown Buenaventura, Colombia, died from diseases caused from poverty. Despite his impoverished environment, Dr. Cuero became a successful basketball star, and a renowned biology scientist. Sport was his mean for surviving social and economic constraints, gave him initial exposure to different cultures and kept his self esteem alive while growing up.

His road to becoming a renowned scientist and inventor was lonely and often discouraging as he encountered cultural prejudices and sometimes humiliation. However, his persistence to develop his mind and to pursue the field of science motivated him through the hard times. He has received many noble awards for his work, including the honor of Distinguished Professor of Microbiology for his inventions.

His constant traveling has opened his mind to the need for third world societies to better their living conditions, and in fact create a Cultural Renascence where art, intellect, science and technology can make a better and safer environment for those people.

Dr. Cuero is a renowned scientist and inventor not only in the United States but internationally. His later work on biogenesis, is the research that he has enjoyed the most, because it has to do with life itself and the unpredictability of the unknown. He has written the book “Triumph and Survival” based on his 20 years of experience in the field of science, discoveries and inventions and explorations through traveling throughout the world.

Dhahran Fables
by  Peart and Magruder  Furman, Fiesta Room Tales

Excerpt from Dhahram Fables:
"Many Americans have visited Saudi Arabia. The experience almost always marks them. Sometimes they write about what they witnessed, how they lived, how they felt, but more often they do not. Sometimes they merely returned to the States with the obligatory brass coffee pot and an eagerness to walk in the rain.  ....The stories in this book are, in the main, told from the perspective of a young person suddenly transported into a strange land with strange customs, and almost, into a different age. However, the astute reader will notice that these stories are peculiarly American stories....."

THE UNDERCOVER RANGER, Barbwire, Longhorns & Windmills
by James Giesalhart

THE UNDERCOVER RANGER, Barbwire, Longhorns & Windmills,  is about men with true grit, the early cowboys who drove Texas longhorns to northern markets. The making of Texas was the railroad, and even though shipping cattle by rail was fought by many ranchers, it turned out to be the most expedient and less costly way for the Texas ranchers.  The railroad brought water to the range area, and made life on the frontier more bearable by helping build towns.

The story embraces how Texas Rangers fought to rid the state of rustlers and killers, sacrificing their own lives to enforce justice. It also tells the struggle of fencing in the wide open ranges, and how in the end, barbed wire was instrumental in breeding and caring for better beef.

James Giesalhart writes it like it was, no romance, just hard work, and dangerous lifestyle. A time when men carried pistols, and knew how to use them.

REFLECTIONS OF A CONFEDERATE SOLDIER: Duty, Honor, and Courage
by Michael Godfrey

Reflections of a Confederate Soldier: Duty, Honor, Courage, provides us with the rare opportunity of recapturing the devastation of the Civil War. Through an assemblage of captivating handwritten letters, my Great Grandfather vividly depicts the massive destruction of cities, homes, incomprehensible  suffering of families along with hardships encountered by military existence. His reference to military strategies and decisions implemented by commanding officers provides insight and clarity.

The stunning eye witness accounts of his brother’s death; killed during combat at Holly Springs, Mississippi; horrifying massacre at Fort Pillows, Tennessee; tragic Battles at Harrisburg and Old Town Creek, Mississippi, provide high emotional voltage. With ultimate precision, the true essence of these letters are revealed and captured through the skillful blending of amusing anecdotes, brief narratives and life force of biographies.

Welcome, to this remarkable journey of discovery!

Who is D.J. of Your Mind?
by David Grover

Working with people on the verge of death has taught David the strong connection between the mind and body. He has learned that the mind has the power to harm or heal and that being aware of your emotions, actions and thoughts is the key to mental health.

What David has to write is practical and simple knowledge that will help you understand “Who is the DJ of your mind?”

About the author: David D. Grover started his career as a hair designer. He has had over 40,000 one on one conversations with clients over the years. They have shared intimate stories of birth, death, success, failure, happiness, depression, tragedy and triumph.

The 250th Field Artillery Men Remember World War II
by Ruby Gwin

The war memories for each were not that easy to tell or write, for some had repressed them long ago when they came home. We have been able to live the American Dream thanks to all these soldiers’ stories that this book is about. These men became brothers in a way we’ll never understand. They spent many a night together away from home with ties that bind one together that has never loosened over the years. These are inspiring stories of faith, courage, patriotism and some told with humor; helped to put their experience into perspective—somewhat!

During this time, our people here at home were doing their part in everyway that they could. Everyone listened to the radio for further news. The good news finally came—from “Day of Infamy” to “War Over!” That wasn’t the case for the many soldiers that came home; many felt fortunate to have come home.

I am proud to say, never once did I not enjoy my work with each of you. Let’s just say—we have a deeper friendship than when we began this project together. I became your ears and wrote the words for many of you. I scribbled making notes as you talked and then, when hunched over my keyboard to translate from them—I couldn’t read my own handwriting. I had thought I would remember what each note meant, but when I started to write from those notes I thought to myself—what is that! Thank God for the memory of our conversations. I pray I conveyed each story as each of you would have. I never knew a thing about the mechanics of writing when I started on my first book “World War II Medic-European Theater.” Perhaps it is a God given way to share with others.

World War II is a very special time in present-day history. Once again, you proved you still can answer to the call to duty, no matter how difficult the task.

World War II Experiences As an Artilleryman in the Pacific Theater 38th Division
by Ruby Gwin

The revealing experiences of World War II in both my “European Theater” and “Pacific Theater” books were hard to write. What is so inspiring was the determination of our soldiers that fought. They have and are leaving a legacy for younger generations to be proud. Writing about our soldiers’ noble or heroic acts, I hope will encourage others to think about their own values and choices. One day, I hope one of my four grandchildren will be inspired to write their story about their Grandfather, Great Uncle’s and other soldiers’ dedication during World War II in his or her words. Aside from a war being fought, people experienced hardship here at home as well as on foreign land during World War II. The United States displayed much adversity with grace-fullness—everyone responded with a pillar of support. Our soldiers endured brutal, exhausting conditions, all the while fought victorious, costly battles in a struggle against difficult odds—one step at a time!

Eternal 101
by S. L. Kemp

Have you ever wondered what God expects of us in life in general, or in a certain area of life, but don’t have the time to dig through the whole Bible to find out?

Eternal Life 101 gives a clear understanding of:

  • Who God is.

  • His purpose for mankind on earth.

  • Our separation from that purpose.

  • How He brought us back.

  • How He gives us supernatural power.

  • How He made us each to be unique.

  • God’s plan for our health.

  • His purpose for marriage.

  • God’s plan for our children.

  • God’s support in times of grief.

Readers have said Eternal Life 101 is:

“Foundational and solid” — a pastor.
“Full of good stuff. It will help many” — a police chief.
“Food for the whole man” — an intercessor.
“Reads like a conversation” — a reading teacher.
“Awesome! I’ve learned a lot!”— a doctor.
“The chapter on grief prepared me for a loss” — a chaplain.

S. L. KEMP is an ordained minister with a master’s degree in Scriptural counseling.  A teacher of the Word of God for thirty years, Rev. Kemp has read the Bible through 32 times and has taught the Bible from cover to cover five times. The Kemps have been married 47 years and have two children, and five grandchildren, all serving the Lord.

It is Rev. Kemp’s prayer  that Eternal Life 101 will guide many families into a life aligned  with the will of God. Only when we come into agreement with our Creator can we find true joy in life on earth.

The Dawson Massacre
by Harry L. Krenek

On September 18, 1842, fifty-three men of the Fayette militia company were trapped by a Mexican army on an open prairie near San Antonio, Texas. After suffering a sustained bombardment of grape and canister for half an hour, the Texans faced an assault by dragoons. When the slaughter ended, only fifteen members of the company remained alive.

Two days later, the survivors were marched deep into Mexico. Three were killed on the march to the prison, and three others died when a typhus epidemic swept through the prison. Two made a daring escape through a tunnel in the pumice stone wall but the others remained in prison for many months.

Told here for the first time, this is the true story of these men and the incident known in the history of Texas as the Dawson Massacre.

Is a snapshot of a part of the history of the Arizona/Mexican border in the 1940’s, the phenomena of the dude ranch, a place where east met west…the eastern dudes met the western cowboys and the western dude ranch was invaded by the east European Hungarian chefs who added paprika to this marvelous stew of a story.

The story of one of the classic dude ranches of the early part of the 20th century, is told in this book by Don Z. Miller who, as a 12 year old, lived, danced, rode, ate goulash, and with the Cowboy and Dudes… and Hungarian Chefs? was a part of the glory days of this Grande Dame of the Arizona dude ranches, the Rancho Grande Hotel.

REFLEXIVE SOCIOLOGY: WORKING PAPERS IN SELF-CRITICAL ANALYSIS
by  Larry T. Reynolds

A college textbook on Sociology by Larry T. Reynolds, professor of Sociology Emeritus at Central Michigan University.

This collection of essays by an early practitioner and still active advocate of the sociology of sociology deals with differences between sociological pronouncements and practices (between what we say and what we do), with the social structuring of sociological theory, with the deconstruction of the race concept, and lastly with the current sorry state of the discipline in North America.

A recent review of Reflexive Sociology proclaims that its author has "...the right to claim the title of Father...if not the outright inventor...of the sociology of sociology...Larry Reynolds - demonstrates his mastery of this subdiscipline at every turn...(He) reveals a deep understanding of what sociology was, is, and might be."

SELF-ANALYTICAL SOCIOLOGY: ESSAYS AND EXPLORATIONS IN THE REFLEXIVE MODE
by Larry T. Reynolds

If ever the time was ripe for the long overdue sociological reexamination of sociology that time is now, as the fin de siecle is upon us. It is a moment made for critique and renewal--truly a time for stocktaking and soul-searching, and maybe even for a little ass kicking. This is the project taken up by Self-Analytical Sociology, a volume that pokes, prods, and in other ways dissects, analyzes, and critiques the profession, discipline, and science of sociology.

Larry T. Reynolds is Emeritus Professor of Sociology at Central Michigan University. He was an early advocate and is still an active practitioner of a self-analytical sociology. A review of his most recent book, Reflexive Sociology (1999) argues that he has "...the right to claim the title of Father...if not the outright inventor...of the sociology of sociology." Reynolds is a past president of the North Central Sociological Association, former chair of the Marxist section of the American Sociological Association, and a recipient of the Charles Horton Cooley Award.

The Struggle of Good and Evil
by Edward Weaver Summers

The writer of this novel is a man that has lived on planet earth for eighty years. It could have been entitled “Peddler of Wisdom from Lessons Learned”. Wisdom is both “Good and Evil” as in king Solomon’s case. God said that Solomon was the wisest man that ever lived or ever would live.

That wisdom did not keep even Solomon from falling into the trap of “money, sex and power”. These are the three things that make up the most destructive forces on the planet.

The writer wishes to thank all of those with whom he came in contact from childhood on through the balance of his life for molding his life and his thinking, most of all his mother and his paternal grandfather whom he called “Grandpa Joe”, a confederate soldier.

The war on terrorism is another example of the struggle between good and evil, according to President Bush. This has been going on since the beginning of time and will continue until the end of time. But this war isn’t new with Bush, and who the terrorists are changes frequently. When someone sits themselves up as the judge of the world as the USA has, the bad guys of today have been good guys in the past maybe. So the old saying “nothing is certain except change” has much merit.

Time is of the Essence
by Margie Watson

This book is an anthology of poetry, prose and essays which contains some of the most profound writing the literary world has ever seen. Even more powerful is the fact that the contributing authors are all incarcerated men. Though confined, these men have not allowed their incarceration to define their identity. Instead, they resist intellectually, by offering contrition for the old selves while cloaking themselves in a new identity, which extends far beyond prison boundaries. They have not allowed their voices to be silenced, instead, they have chosen to raise their voices in protest of our collective condition of subservience and "social" incarceration. Contrary to public perception, they have not allowed their humanity to be diminished behind concrete, steel and razor wire, but continue to fly freely in spite of the physical confinement. They do not wallow in misery and self-pity, but use their pens and creativity to pay tribute to our universal triumphs. They do not quietly acquiesce to subjugation, but courageously allow their souls to soar high above labels and stereotypes, and through their writing, offer valuable insights into the microcosm they exist in while exhibiting a firm understanding of the social dynamics in the greater society which they yearn to return to. Through their creative expression, they challenge your intellect, uplift your spirits, and provide a much-needed wake-up call to our society through verses of love, tears of discontent, and fiery lyrics of protest. They not only identify the problems afflicting our communities, but also offer concrete solutions instead of continuing the cycle of perpetual rhetoric. They have done the studying of what’s necessary to reclaim our communities, and are prepared to take their rightful place and responsibility in the communities and families they will return to. This book is a call out from the prodigal sons/brothers/husbands/fathers who are preparing to come back home, hoping to be embraced. This is a must read for anyone who enjoys contemporary poetry. And, it will shed new light on a much ignored segment of our population, as well as shatter all previously held stereotypes about prisoners, especially black men.
